The weekend of February 18th athletes from Maggie Walker Wrestling were competed in the VHSL 4A State Tournament.  In order to qualify for states, wrestlers had to finish in the top four spots for the previous Conference Tournament (hosted at Maggie Walker) and the 2A Regional Tournament.

On the experience at States, Cole Cummins (‘19) quoted, “[States] was really cool but also super intense because there was a bunch of crazy athletes there all at once.  They do 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A States all in the same stadium on the same weekend, so there was a huge crowd.”

The three qualifiers from Maggie Walker, Joe Paul (‘18), Cole Cummins (‘19), and David Winters (‘19), finished 5th, 5th, and 4th, respectively. Cummins attributes their success to the Maggie Walker coaching staff composed of Don Blanton, longtime Maggie Walker P.E. Teacher, and Ernie Sims, member of the Richmond Police.

“Coaches Blanton and Simms are both very well versed in wrestling and taught the team the skills required to be successful,” remarked Cummins.

Despite their loss of three senior captains, Pierce Tarry, Julian Vaughn, and Brennan Brown, the future looks bright for Walker wrestling.

And if you’re interested in trying wrestling?

“Anyone interested in wrestling next year should definitely come out and try the sport. It’s fun and a great way to stay in shape!” says Cummins.
